Course Objectives
Mat Cutting
- To understand the importance of setting up and operating the mat cutter properly
- To explain the calibration and measuring options of the mat cutter
- To demonstrate the need for accuracy in measuring and marking the matboard
- To identify the elements involved affecting quality of the cuts
- To recognise and compensate for variations in matboard thickness and density
- To understand and apply techniques used to accomplish various matting combinations and designs
Conservation
- To explain what is meant by the term 'conservation'
- To examine from what source damage to works of art originate
- To try and determine when conservation framing is required
- To demonstrate the use, selection and application of conservation materials
- To understand the responsibilities of the framer
- To look at problem solving and answer questions
Mounting Methods
- To identify various mediums, papers and textiles involved in the creation of art
- To examing products, methods and materials used in the process of mounting
- To be aware of difficulties, problems and detrimental affects associated with the mounting of artwork
- To determine which mounting method should be adopted and applied
- To demonstrate the application of mounting products and materials
- To discuss various types of equipment designed for mounting artwork
Cutting and Joining
- To examine the variety and selection of materials used in the manufacture of mouldings
- To understand products and operate equipment used to cut and join moulding
- To use materials and techniques in fitting, repairing and hanging the finished frame
- To demonstrate the importance of equipment care and maintenance
- To examine problems and difficulties in cutting and joining
- To be aware of and ensure implementation of health and safety procedures for all machine operators
